Towns & Nations — Build Your Empire

Two Layers: Towns and Nations

CivSMP's player-organisation system has two layers:

  • Towns — small to large groups of players sharing claimed land. Towns are the base unit. Every player who wants to protect their builds needs to be in a town.
  • Nations — alliances of multiple towns. Nations sit above towns and provide a shared identity, badge, levels, achievements, and bank.

You can be in a town without being in a nation. You can't be in a nation without being in a town first.

Founding a Town

Stand somewhere in the wilderness you'd like to claim, then:

/town new <name>

This makes you the Mayor of a new town. The chunk you're standing in is claimed automatically. The town spawn is set there too.

Town creation has a small fee. Check /town new without arguments to see the current cost.

Joining a Town

Don't want to lead? Join an existing town instead:

/town list           — browse all towns
/town join <name>    — request to join (if the town is public)

Most towns require an invite. Ask in chat or check the Discord for towns that are recruiting.

Town Basics

Founding a Nation

Once your town is established, you can found a nation. You must be the Mayor of a town that isn't already part of a nation:

/nation new <name>

You become the King of the new nation, and your town becomes its capital. Other towns can now join your nation under your leadership.

Joining a Nation

If you're a Mayor and want to join an existing nation, ask the King to invite you:

/nation add <yourtown>     — issued by the King
/nation join <nation>      — sometimes possible if the nation is open

Once accepted, your entire town becomes part of the nation — all residents inherit the nation membership.

The Nation Menu

CivSMP has a dedicated GUI for nations. Open it with:

/nmenu

This is where you'll spend most of your nation-management time. It shows:

  • Your nation's custom badge — a stylized shield with border, colors, and patterns
  • Current level and XP progress
  • The full town strip showing every town in your nation with the Mayor's head
  • Quick access to the badge designer, levels grid, achievements, and settings

Nation Badges

Every nation gets a fully customizable shield-style badge — pick a border, background color, and two pattern layers each with their own color. The King is the only one who can edit it, via /nmenu. Once set, the badge shows up:

  • In the Nation menu for everyone in the nation
  • As an inline icon next to player names in TAB (top-right player list)

Nation Levels

Nations level up from 1 to 15, earning XP through several sources:

Each level unlocks:

  • More badge patterns and borders to customize your shield
  • More town slots (3 at level 1, up to 12 at the top)
  • Higher position on the leaderboards

Hitting level 15 is the ultimate nation-prestige milestone.

Nation Achievements

Open /nmenu → Achievements to see four progression tracks:

Every achievement pays out bonus XP, so the more you complete the faster your nation grows.

The Nation Bank

Nations have a shared bank account that all member towns can deposit to. Use it to:

  • Pay for nation-level upkeep
  • Fund collective dungeon runs and gear
  • Save up for cosmetic upgrades and Landlord chunks
  • Trigger the Bank achievement tier

Deposit via /nation deposit <amount>. The King controls withdrawals via /nation withdraw <amount>.

Nation Ranks

Towny's default nation rank hierarchy maps onto CivSMP as:

Tips for Aspiring Kings

  • Found your town first, recruit, then form the nation — don't form a nation with no allies waiting
  • Keep both banks topped up — town AND nation have daily upkeep; running dry triggers ruin
  • Customize your badge early — it's free and gives your nation real identity
  • Chase achievements — score and bank achievements give the biggest XP returns
  • Recruit complementary towns — a Builder-focused town pairs well with a Miner town
  • Coordinate dungeon runs — a nation that grinds together levels faster than a nation that doesn't
